History of Bells at (Old) Bolingbroke

According to the book

THE CHURCH BELLS OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF LINCOLN

by Thomas North FSA, published in 1882, there was at that time only one bell at Sts Peter & Paul, (Old) Bolingbroke, while in 1553 an unknown number of 'great belles' - (probaby iij = 3) and a smaller Sanctus bell.

The current Sanctus Bell is dated c.1800 according to Dove's Guide and is only 17.88".

A short time after the publication of THE CHURCH BELLS OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF LINCOLN, the front 5 bells were cast (1897) by John Taylor & Co.

The tenor however, is dated 1604 and is 42.13". This is most probably the single bell described above in 1882.

The jury is out as to whether the "(c.1800)" sanctus bell noted in Dove's Guide and which hangs in the belfry now might be the Sanctus of 1553.

The maker's stamp shown above is that of Henry Oldfield II, a bell founder in Nottingham.
